Description
MITCHELLED™ – Martha
Sometimes the easiest way to dismiss an uncomfortable truth is to dismiss the person telling it.
Mitchelled™ is our word for exactly that: when someone is discredited, labeled, marginalized, or portrayed as irrational instead of confronting the substance of what they are saying.
The name honors Martha Mitchell, the outspoken wife of Nixon Attorney General John Mitchell. During Watergate, she publicly made allegations that sounded extraordinary—and was widely portrayed as unstable. Much of what she was saying was later substantiated.
Her story became associated with what psychologists later called the Martha Mitchell Effect: mistaking an accurate but seemingly unbelievable claim for delusion.
The target represents what happens when the messenger becomes the target instead of the message.
You don’t have to agree with someone to listen.
Discrediting a person is not the same thing as disproving them.
Don’t get Mitchelled™.
